EverQuest est un jeu de rôle en ligne massivement multijoueur sur le thème du fantasme 3D (MMORPG). Les joueurs déplacent leur personnage dans le monde de la fantaisie médiévale de Norrath, souvent combattre les monstres et les ennemis pour des points de trésor et d'expérience, et en option maîtriser les compétences commerciales. Au fur et à mesure qu'ils progressent, les joueurs progressent dans leur niveau, gagnent du pouvoir, du prestige, des sorts et des capacités grâce à des actions vaillantes, comme entrer dans des châteaux envahis et les garder, vaincre des adversaires dignes trouvés à l'intérieur, et piller leurs restes. L'expérience et l'équipement prestigieux peuvent également être obtenus en complétant les quêtes données par des personnages non joueurs trouvés dans tout le pays. EverQuest permet aux joueurs d'interagir avec d'autres personnes à travers des jeux de rôle, des guildes de joueurs et des duels d'autres joueurs (dans des situations restreintes – EverQuest permet uniquement le combat joueur contre joueur (PVP) sur le serveur spécifique PvP, les zones arènes spécifiées et par le duel convenu).
