Minecraft Movie Trailer Faces Major Backlash: Over 1.5 Million Dislikes and Growing
September 19, 2024
The trailer for the new Minecraft movie just dropped, and let’s just say fans aren’t thrilled. In fact, the trailer has already racked up over 1.5 million dislikes on YouTube since its release.
For a game that’s beloved by millions, it’s surprising to see how quickly the community has turned on this upcoming movie.
Why Are Fans Upset?
The biggest issue seems to be the movie’s mix of live-action and CGI, which many fans feel doesn’t fit Minecraft‘s blocky, pixelated world. Instead of embracing the game’s iconic, low-res look, the movie takes a more realistic approach with the characters and mobs, which just doesn’t sit right with fans. One commenter on Reddit put it best: “Why does it feel like I’m watching Jumanji but in cubes?”Jason Momoa and Jack Black being cast as lead characters is another sore spot. While both are big names in Hollywood, fans feel they don’t represent the original vibe of the Minecraft characters. Steve, the game’s default character, has a simple, no-frills design, and seeing Jack Black play a more fleshed-out version just didn’t click with many fans. Some even feel that Steve has been whitewashed in the process
“The Sonic Movie Situation” All Over Again?
Fans are now comparing this backlash to what happened with the Sonic the Hedgehog movie in 2019. If you remember, Sonic’s design in the original trailer was a complete mess with fans, and the studio ended up redesigning the character to match the game’s look. Now, Minecraft fans are hoping Warner Bros. will take similar steps to fix the movie before it comes out next yearThere’s a big hope that the studio listens to the feedback and makes the movie more faithful to the game. Many are even suggesting the movie should go full-animation like The Super Mario Bros. movie, which was a big hit and embraced the game’s style perfectly
What Now?
With the movie set to release in April 2025, Warner Bros. has some time to respond to this growing criticism. Fans are already very vocal about what they don’t like, so there’s a chance we could see some changes made before the movie drops.
But as it stands, the Minecraft movie is facing an uphill battle to win over the game’s fanbase.
Will this movie end up surprising everyone, or will it go down as a major misstep for Warner Bros.?
Only time will tell, but right now, fans are letting the studio know loud and clear that they want something closer to the game they know and love. Let’s hope they’re listening.
